10:00-10:20

In the grand opening ceremony of the Greentech Festival 2024, we will launch discussions off with positivity, a few celebrity surprises and deep insights into the future of sustainable business. To build a better world we need brave voices calling for change and leaders willing to take risks in order to build incredible visions. ‘Business as usual’ is dead and in our new world, sustainability has become synonymous with success and the market, customers and investors will reward those who stand behind inclusive, sustainable and ethical values. How do we start this journey today, how to we measure success and how do we communicate the small and big wins along the way. Let’s start the conversation, unafraid and open to great possibilities.

What is a ‘just and equitable’ transition away from fossil fuels?

Thursday 16.05

Main Stage

10:20-11:00

Many spectators see COP28’s inclusion of the wording “transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly and equitable manner” as a large concession to the oil industry. At the same time, our entire global supply chains and food systems rest on fossil fuel energy in order to sustain trade and food security. How do we make a “just and equitable transition” that is fast enough to save the planet without leaving anybody behind?

AI & Data-driven sustainability: can we upgrade industry at speed?

Thursday 16.05

Main Stage

11:00-11:30

‘You can’t improve what you can’t measure’ goes the old management adage and in the era of connected systems, big data and AI, this saying couldn’t be more true. Yet are we going to fall into the same traps as we did at the beginning of the IoT revolution where lack of investment in infrastructure, lack of interoperability and lack of long-term strategy has held up efficiency gains. So what do we need in place, politically and in our businesses to leverage data and AI for the good of the planet?

How do we fight Greenwashing?

Thursday 16.05

Main Stage

11:30-12:00

“Get your green advantage today” claimed the title of recent keynote from a major consulting company. And what were the incentives?: unlock new markets, loyal customers and investors, and attract the brightest young recruits. Little wonder that sustainability marketing is a hotbed for exaggeration, vague promises or even all-out deception. Yet anybody who’s witnessed a customer/investor backlash over greenwashing knows the high price to pay for straying in those murky waters. So, how can we fight the good fight against greenwashing, and what can we all do today to make sure they we don’t end up becoming greenwashers ourselves?

Fit to Print?: Balancing Hope and Urgency in Climate Journalism

Thursday 16.05

Main Stage

12:00-12:15

Daily we’re bombarded with negative press about the state of the climate: the ice caps are melting, ecosystems are collapsing, climate conflict and migration are raging and meanwhile business seems to continues as usual. The media has a duty to report the facts, but if factual reporting causes widespread apathy and disengagement around climate change, then aren’t we doing more harm than good? So how do we strike the balance between the pressure and urgency needed to spark action with narratives of hope and human resilience that will keep fighting for change in the decades to come?

CSOs, sustainability managers and everything in between: what’s in a role?

Thursday 16.05

Main Stage

15:30-16:00

While the job titles around sustainability may seem self-explainitory, the role is anything but. Firstly, success in this function requires winning over stakeholders across the company hierarchy while building partnerships, and collaborations beyond the company that will lead to lasting impact. Secondly, there’s no simple guidebook as every sustainability manager’s role must be aligned to their unique business environment, company culture and values. How can we get the most out of managing sustainability and turn a complex role into a dynamo for success?

Handelsblatt Conference Wrap-up: Fighting fraud in carbon credit markets with AI

Thursday 16.05

Main Stage

17:30-17:45

It was a part of a wake-up call that reshaped an entire industry: Renoster, a boutique carbon market rating agency, utilised AI and Machine Learning to scrutinise the Kariba Project, a major industry initiative involving numerous household name companies. Renoster’s findings, which revealed the project’s flaws and raised serious questions about its credibility, initiated a crucial dialogue and spurred widespread awareness about the issues. Alongside work from other companies, these developments formed part of the infamous Verra Scandal, as reported by Die Zeit and The Guardian, which exposed the prevalence of ‘Phantom credits’ and prompted much-needed reforms. Join Rachael Ross, a forest scientist at Renoster, as she discusses the positive changes that have followed, and how technology and good governance are essential for restoring investor confidence in the carbon market for the future.

Complex, hard to measure, overly technical and disconnected from the people that matter; it is often too easy for business to relegate scope 3 emissions as “outside our control”. Yet if we are going to protect people and planet for shared prosperity, then we must find ways to collaborate, capacitate Scope 3 solutions across global value chains. Doing so will require global dialogue, rights based and technology-driven transparency, and champions in business. Who do we blame: are consumers, government or airlines holding back sustainable air transport?

Thursday 16.05

Solution Stage

13:30-14:30

Flying continues to sit in the ‘too hard basket’ when it comes to large-scale decarbonisation. While investments in Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and innovative electric propulsion solutions continue to grow, the mainstay of sustainability efforts for the foreseeable future will be depending on offsetting, an area where consumer trust and efficacy remains questionable. In light of these stalling developments, who’s holding back development and how can we overcome slow progress in sustainable aviation to keep on flying?

Forget killer robots: Is AI already destroying our planet?

Thursday 16.05

15:00-16:00

Has it all just become too easy?: write me a text, explain NFTs, create a logo for my new company. Yet as soon as those AI servers start whirring into action, they take an unmeasured toll on our environment. Far from genius, neuroscientists have calculated that solving problems with AI is 1000x less energy efficient than the human mind. Predictions are that AI use will cause the IT sector to double its emissions by 2030 eclipsing both the shipping and airline industries. Whether it’s green servers, efficient models or regulation, a solution must be found to the growing problem of AI-based climate damage.

We have a clear position on this: how can permeable paving stones support the transformation of cities?

There’s a lot of talk of moving towards circular business models, yet in terms of true circularity, most of these projects remain purely theoretical. Is HR-leadership the key to sustainable transformation?

Friday 17.05

Main Stage

10:50-11:20

It’s often said that “culture eats strategy for breakfast”. This couldn’t be more true than in corporate sustainability programmes. A strategy could be followed today, tomorrow and might even last till next year, but culture underlies our behaviours and choices and is there for the long haul. Once in place, a sustainability culture will create space for diversity, inclusion, empowerment and employee engagement ideally making your company choose the ethical and sustainable route by default. Come and find out how HR-excellence can help curate a future-driven culture in your organisation.

Northvolt Giga Factory Drei – Echte Arbeitsplätze für die Grüne Wirtschaft? (DE)

Friday 17.05

11:20-11:40

Why we’ve only got 50 harvests left!

Friday 17.05

Main Stage

12:00-12:10

Each year, we lose 1% of our arable land, amounting to a staggering loss of 10 million hectares. Soil, vital for current and future generations, is a non-renewable resource. Presently, each person requires approximately 10,000 square meters of land for food production. To mitigate this loss by over 90%, we must implement sustainable agricultural practices and promote land conservation efforts on a global scale.

Friday 17.05

Friday 17.05

Main Stage

It’s the perfect storm: growing populations, accelerating meat consumption, over-farming and land degradation and all this in a world where food production already represents 20% of the global GHG emission. Will Foodtech and high-tech agricultural science really save us? Can we really have our cake and eat it too by producing large food at scale in a way that is still good for the planet? In this panel, leading experts will discuss what Food Tech can and can’t do in reshaping the way we eat, grow and produce food on a climate-affected planet.

Friday 17.05

Are carbon certificates still sustainable?

Friday 17.05

Deepdive Stage

12:00-12:45

Against the backdrop of a worsening climate crisis pressure on non-governmental actors to take measures to protect the climate is growing. Companies and organizations are increasingly looking for alternatives to the strategic goal of their own carbon neutrality as well as alternative climate finance models which contribute to global mitigation efforts. Several approaches in the implementation have been taken, leading to a fragmentation of models and claims. Additionally, recent political initiatives and regulations – such as the Green Claims Directive of the European Union – ask for more rigorous and robust claims in the offsetting market as well as environmental related claims. Which strategies and future models are available? How do companies vs NGOs look on this task? Which perspectives they can see on the horizon?
