Bulgaria adds 1 GW of batteries in five weeks as recovery-plan projects hit their deadline
Bulgaria's grid-scale battery capacity rose from 4.4 GW to 5.4 GW between 10 July and 17 August, more than five times Romania's fleet. This summer, as drought cut hydro and nuclear output, the batteries helped double the country's power exports.
Bulgaria’s grid-scale battery capacity rose by about 1 GW in five weeks this summer, from 4,405 MW on 10 July to 5,406 MW on 17 August, according to ENTSO-E data reported by Spotmedia. Projects backed by the EU recovery plan and the national RESTORE programmes were racing to meet a 31 July completion deadline. Euronews now counts about 100 operating battery sites with 5.7 GW of capacity, close to a quarter of Bulgaria’s installed generation, and more than five times Romania’s.
