Thailand ties car excise tax to local manufacturing as electrified models take 55% of sales

Thailand's EV policy committee has agreed in principle to a four-tier excise structure that rewards local assembly and local content and charges importers without Thai plants more. BOI-approved EV investment now stands at 151.4bn baht.

Thailand will restructure its vehicle excise tax so that what a carmaker pays depends on how much it builds and buys in the country. The National Electric Vehicle Policy Committee agreed the overhaul in principle on 10 September. Battery-electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles together took a record 55% of new-car registrations in the first seven months of 2026, the first time they have outsold combustion models. Board of Investment (BOI) approvals across the EV supply chain now total about 151.4 billion baht (US$4.59 billion) over 189 projects.
